Welcome to Historic Ennis, Texas
Historic Ennis

"This website is currently under construction and will be replaced with a completely new look. As a result there are some features and pages that are not working correctly until the new site is published. Our sincere apologies for any inconvience this may cause."
Sincerely,
Webmaster (HTMD)
The Historic Templeton McCanless District is the result of the hard work of a community that was started long ago. The district today represents the people living within and outside of it that support and encourage its preservation. In support of not only the history of Ennis, but also that of the surrounding communities within Ellis County this site was created to provide:

Information pertaining to the preservation and restoration of our historic district.

Sources for vendors who specialize in preservation and renovation of historic homes.

A forum for asking questions about how to find, do, or repair everything from antiques to what type of mortor to use on an old home.

A document that will become the guidelines for residential preservation and restoration.

The people who care about its' preservation desire that this site represent the aspirations and concerns of all the home owners who live within the district. There is no intent to reflect the individual views or opinions of any person within the district but rather to give the community at large a voice.

We hope you enjoy what you find here and learn something that will help you and your efforts to keep our historic district a place where history and craftsmanship can be seen, heritage can be remembered and the goodwill of the community be felt.

Newsflash
Why Should We Preserve Historic Places?

If we wish to have a future with greater meaning, we must concern ourselves...with the total heritage of the nation and all that is worth preserving from our past as a living part of the present.

-- With Heritage So Rich, 1966

There are a variety of programs to identify and assist in preserving historic properties as living parts of communities, States, and the Nation. In 1992, the U.S. Congress reaffirmed the reasons for enacting these programs:

  • The spirit and direction of the Nation are founded upon and reflected in its historic heritage.
  • The historical and cultural foundations of the Nation should be preserved as a living part of our community life and development in order to give a sense of orientation to the American people.
  • Historic properties significant to the Nation's heritage are being lost or substantially altered, often inadvertently, with increasing frequency.
  • The preservation of this irreplaceable heritage is in the public interest so that its vital legacy of cultural, educational, aesthetic, inspirational, economic, and energy benefits will be maintained and enriched for future generations of Americans.
